A North Carolina notarial certificate for an oath or affirmation, also known as a “jurat,” is a document that is completed by a notary public after they have administered an oath or affirmation. A “jurat” is a notarial certificate that states when, where, and before whom an oath, affirmation, affidavit, or other statement was sworn. An “oath or affirmation” is a sworn statement that an individual makes in front of a notary, attesting to the statement’s truthfulness. The certificate states that the oath/affirmation was sworn and signed in the notary’s presence. The notary public must provide the principal’s name, the date on which the oath/affirmation was witnessed, as well as the county in which it was administered. For the certificate to be valid, the notary will need to affix their signature and official stamp or seal to it.
